Theft consists in taking away the property of others. It happens times out of number that one takes hold of a thing belonging to another person by mistake. The case of persons whose feet lack instinctive sensibility is in point. They get off wearing the shoes of others by mistake. Suppose such a person were apprehended and prosecuted before a court and sentenced to undergo imprisonment, he would suffer the manifest punishment of sin, but his heart will not be affected with darkness, for the simple reason that he did not lift the shoes with intent to steal.
