8 JESUS IN INDIA bloodthirsty Mahdi named Imam Muhammad, that the Messiah will come down from the skies to lend him a helping hand, and that the two of them together will kill all non-Muslims if they deny Islam, is utterly opposed to moral sense. Is this belief not such as renders ineffective all good human qualities and morals, and give rise to the development of beastly passions. Those who hold such beliefs have to lead a life of hypocrisy with the people of every other nation, so much so that it becomes impossible for them to even give true loyalty to their alien rulers. They give expression to a false allegiance by way of deception. This is indeed why in this country of British India,some of the Ahle-Hadith sects mentioned above are living a kind of duplicitous life under the British Government. That is to say, in secret, they hold out hopes to the common people of the coming of the days of blood- shed and are awaiting a bloodthirsty Mahdi and Messiah, and preach accordingly; but when they present themselves before the rulers they sing their praises, and tell them that they are opposed to such ideas. But if they are really and sincerely opposed to such ideas, why is it that they do not give wide publicity of their oppo- sition to these ideas in their writings, and why do they await the coming of the bloodthirsty Mahdi and Messiah so impatiently as if they were standing at the doorstep, eager to join him? In short, it is because of such beliefs that the moral condition of these types of clerics has suffered much deterioration and they are no longer qualified to teach peace and compassion. On the contrary, killing the people of other faiths for no rhyme or reason is considered to be a great obligation of religiosity. I would be very glad if any sect of the Ahle-Hadith is opposed to these wrong beliefs, but I cannot desist from mentioning with regret that among the sects
