If two nations, tribes, or countries were at war, the people of the defeated nation could be captured and made into slaves. Slaves were kept as servants and would be forced to do various types of work, including house chores, construction, farming, etc. Slaves could be sold at any time. Over time, people started getting slaves without any reason.
