from men That is, turn not thy cheek away in pride nor walk in the earth haughtily; Surely, Allah loves not any arrogant boaster. Now, Luqmanas says that when you demon- strate patience, people will turn towards you after a sustained period of time, because when you cut yourself off from the world for the sake of God, people will begin to harbour enmity against you. Eventually God will turn their at- tention towards you to the extent that it is prob- able that I will become discourteous towards them. Thus, do not do this; so when you walk, walk as if there is not even a semblance of ar- rogance, as such an action will displease God. [The next verse states]: you وَاقْصِدُ فِي مَشْيِكَ وَاغْضُضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ إِنَّ أَنْكَرَ الْأَصْوَاتِ لَصَوْتُ الْحَمِيرِ That is, walk thou at a moderate pace, and 1 Surah Luqman, 31:20 [Publishers] -41-
