ل ل لالا (1) Particle introducing an oath and meaning truly, indeed, certainly or in exclamations of wonder or for help. لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِي سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُوْنَ : By thy life, they in their mad intoxication are wandering in distraction )15:73( فَوَ رَبِّكَ لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ : And by thy Lord We shall certainly gather them together (19:69). (2) It is used in the sense of بأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَى لَهَا . إلى : For thy Lord has commanded her and revealed to her (99:6). (3) To denote رر particular right of possession. لِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ وَ لِرَسُوْلِهِ : All honour belongs to Allah and to His Messenger (63:9). (4) To denote the usefulness of a thing. وَ اَلنَّا لَهُ الْحَدِيْدَ : And We made the iron soft for his benefit (34:11). (5) To begin a sentence. لَيُوْسُفُ وَأَخُوْهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَى أَبَيْنَا : Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father )12:9(. )6( Is used in the sense of "until", "upto" لَاَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى : Until an appointed term (13:3). (7) To express certainty or to lay emphasis. إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ : This is indeed a Noble Qur'an )56:78(. )8( To denote cause or command. لِيُنْفِقْ ذُوْسَعَةٍ : So that or let him who has abundance of means spend (65:8) (9) Το : إِنَّمَا نُمْلِي لَهُمْ لِيَزْدَادُوْا إِثْمًا (لَامُ الْعَاقِبَةِ) denote result or consequence The result of Our granting them respite will only be that they will increase in sin (3:179). (10) Is used in the sense of لِيَوْمِ فِي الْقِيَامَةِ : On the Day of Resurrection (21:48). (11) In the sense of تَلَّهُ لِلْجَبِيْنِ عَلَى : Had thrown him on his forehead )37:104(. )12( At the : لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى غَسَقِ الَّيْلِ بَعْدُ and عِنْدَ In the sense of لا declining or after the declining of the sun (17:79). Used as لا نَفِي جِئْسٍ and the following noun has a فَلَا رَفَتْ وَلا فَتْحَهْ 2:198) فُسُوْقَ(. It is used in the sense of لا جَرَمَ (6:6010:62) لَيْسَ is an Arabic idiom meaning by all means, necessarily, certainly. لا جَرَمَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُوْنَ : Undoubtedly, it is they who will be the losers in the Hereafter (16:110). In the beginning of a sentence it constitutes the answer to an understood question or to refute that what is in the mind of an enquirer. لا أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ : Nay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection (75:2). لالَّا النَّجْمُ لالا : The star shone and brightened. لُؤْلُؤُ and لَالِيُّ : Pearls )لُؤْلُوةٌ singular(. كَأَنَّهُمْ لُؤْلُفٌ مَّكْنُونٌ : As if they are well preserved 731
