Chapter Eight 170 dared not erase it. Muḥammad sa himself erased it and Muḥammad bin ‘Abdullāh was written in its place. The following were the conditions of the treaty: 1. This year, the Muslims will return without performing the circuit of Ka‘bah and the pilgrimage (‘Umrah). 1 2. They will come back next year, but will not stay for more than 3 days, and will keep their swords sheathed. 2 3. If a person from the Quraish goes over to the Muslims without the permission of his guardian, he will be returned to the Quraish. 3 But if a person from the Muslims goes to the Quraish, he will not be returned. 4 4. The tribes of Arabia will have the option to enter into treaties with any groups they wish. 5 5. The duration of the treaty will be 10 years. 6 These were the main conditions of the treaty and the Companions were particularly unhappy with the first three conditions. When the treaty was being written, Abū Jandal, a Makkan who was the son of Suhail and had been imprisoned for the crime of becoming a Muslim, escaped and appeared before Muḥammad sa. He showed his fresh wounds to Muḥammad sa and said that living in Makkah was very painful for him, and requested permission to go to Madīnah with the Muslims. Suhail, his father, said that Muḥammad sa 1 Bukhārī, Kitāb ash-Sharūṭ and Kitāb aṣ-Ṣulḥ. 2 Bukhārī, Kitābul-Maghāzī, Bāb ‘Umratul-Qa. a’, and Kitābul-Jihād (Book of Fighting for the Cause of Allah), Bāb al-Maṣālah ‘Alā Thalatha Ayyām (Three Day Treaty). 3 Ibni Hishām, Bukhārī, Kitāb ash-Sharῡt and Kitābul-Maghāzī. 4 Bukhārī, Kitāb aṣ-Ṣulḥ, Bāb aṣ-Ṣulḥ al-Mushrikīn (Treaty with Disbelievers). 5 Ibni Hishām, Ibn S‘ad and Aṭ-Ṭabarī. 6 Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Kitābul-Jihād (Book of Fighting for the Cause of Allah) and Ibni Hishām and Ibni Sa‘d.
