Chapter Seven 136 If you are alive, then all hardships are insignificant. 1 A young Companion named Jābir ra appeared before Muḥammad sa. Muḥammad sa noticed the signs of grief on his face because of the martyrdom of his father. Muḥammad sa said, “Jābir, shall I tell you some good news?” Jābir said, “Yes, Messenger of Allah. ” Muḥammad sa said: Allah does not speak to anyone except from behind a veil, but He conversed directly with your father (after his martyrdom) without a veil and said, ‘Ask of Me whatever it is you desire and I shall give you. ’ Your father submitted, ‘O my Allah! (Your favours are endless. ) But my desire is that I am brought back to life, so that I may once again give my life for Your sake. Allah responded: (We would have fulfilled this desire of yours except that) We have vowed that: (Al-Anbiyā’ 21:96) They shall not return. This meant that no dead person could ever return to the world. Muḥammad sa said, “Your father said, in that case describe my (good) condition to my brothers so they could also be drawn towards Jihād. ” The following verse was revealed after that: 1 Ibni Hishām and Tārīkhul-Khamīs.
