PUBLISHER'S NOTE xxi ثth – pronounced like th in the English word thing. بح - a guttural aspirate, stronger than h. kh – pronounced like the Scottish ch in loch. ذ dh – pronounced like the English th in that. ؟ ص - strongly articulated s. ضd – similar to the English th in this. ط - strongly articulated palatal t. ظ - strongly articulated z. ع a strong guttural, the pronunciation of which must be learnt by the ear. a sound similar to the French r in grasseye, and to the German v. It requires the muscles of the throat to be in the 'gar- gling' position to pronounce it. وق ء - a deep guttural k sound. '- a sort of catch in the voice. Short vowels are represented by: a for i for и for و Long vowels by: (like u in bud). (like i in bid). (like oo in wood). ۱ ā for for for و or î (like a in father). or (like ee in deep). (like oo in root). Other vowels by: ai for aufor (like i in site). (resembling ou in sound).
