PUBLISHER'S NOTE xiii ؟ ص - strongly articulated s. ضd – similar to the English th in this. ط - strongly articulated palatal t. جظ – strongly articulated z. ع ق a strong guttural, the pronunciation of which must be learnt by the ear. gh - a sound similar to the French r in grasseye, and to the German v. It requires the muscles of the throat to be in the 'gargling' position to pronounce it. q - a deep guttural k sound. ء a sort of catch in the voice. Short vowels are represented by: a for i for и for و Long vowels by: (like u in bud). (like i in bid). (like oo in wood). ā for or آ )like a in father(. for or (like ee in deep). for و (like oo in root). Other vowels by: ai for (like i in site). au for (resembling ou in sound).
