The Need for the Imam

  • Simply Receiving Divine Revelation Does Not Make One an Imam

    وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا-

    And make us a model for the righteous.

    لَهُمُ ٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰ فِي ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا

    For them are glad tidings in the present life.

    إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُواْ وَلَا تَحۡزَنُواْ

    As for those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah,’ and then remain steadfast, the angels descend on them, saying: ‘Fear ye not, nor grieve.

    وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمِّ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنۡ أَرۡضِعِيهِ ۖ فَإِذَا خِفۡتِ عَلَيۡهِ فَأَلۡقِيهِ فِي ٱلۡيَمِّ وَلَا تَخَافِي وَلَا تَحۡزَنِيٓ ۖ إِنَّا رَآدُّوهُ إِلَيۡكِ وَجَاعِلُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

    And We revealed to the mother of Moses saying, ‘Suckle him; and when thou fearest for him, then cast him into the river and fear not, nor grieve; for We shall restore him to thee, and shall make him one of the Messengers.’

    وَكَانُواْ مِن قَبۡلُ يَسۡتَفۡتِحُونَ

    And before that they had prayed for victory.

    يَعۡرِفُونَهُۥ كَمَا يَعۡرِفُونَ أَبۡنَآءَهُمۡ

    Recognize it even as they recognize their sons.

    أَعۡطَىٰ كُلَّ شَيۡءٍ خَلۡقَهُ

    He gave unto everything its proper form.

    وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٖ

    And thou dost surely possess high moral excellences.

  • 14

    رَّبِّ زِدۡنِي عِلۡمٗا

    ‘O my Lord, increase me in knowledge.’

    ذَٰلِكَ فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ يُؤۡتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُ

    That is Allah’s grace; He bestows it on whom He pleases.

    إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيۡسَ لَكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ سُلۡطَٰنٌ

    ‘Surely, thou shalt have no power over My servants.

    أَطِيعُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَمۡرِ مِنكُمۡ

    Obey Allah, and obey His Messenger and those who are in authority among you.

  • We Must Submit to the Imam For Our Spiritual Life

  • 38

    ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ

    Guide us in the right path —

  • 38

    صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ

    The path of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy blessings,

  • I Have Been Sent as the Hakam (Judge) of the Age

  • 41

    فَلَمَّا تَوَفَّيۡتَنِي

    but since Thou didst cause me to die,

    ٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ حَيۡثُ يَجۡعَلُ رِسَالَتَهُ

    Allah knows best where to place His Message.

    Why do you say what you do not do?

    كَبُرَ مَقۡتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَن تَقُولُواْ مَا لَا تَفۡعَلُونَ

    Most hateful is it in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.
