Introduction xxvii Below I give the opinion of two of them: Mr. George Rulf, of Heaton, Newcastle-on-Tyne, in a long letter says: I was much interested in your article about the claim of a Muslim sect that the Master, Jesus, did not die on the cross, but travelled via Persia and Afghanistan to Kashmir and eventually died at Srinagar where his body was buried. This practically tallies with a trance address, given many years ago by a well-known spirit guide. But, I think, the time has come when people should wean themselves from accepting as truth the theological fairy tales that have no foundation in fact. That guide said that he hoped we would never ask him that question, but as we had—and as he had promised us to always tell the TRUTH—he would tell us the true story, although he was afraid that it would be unpalatable to most people with orthodox leanings. He began by saying that the name Jesus was in those days as common as our name Smith. My own comment is: The Master Jesus was not known in his own day by the name of Jesus, but by his proper name of Joshua. Only much later, when the Gospel accounts were compiled, did the compilers decide to change the name to the Greek YAYZOUS (our writing: Jesus) as there had already been a Prophet Joshua and, they thought if they called the Master ‘Joshua II’ it might cause confusion. In this, I think, they were justified. The Guide said that the passion story was a
