Chapter Twelve—The Unknown Life of Jesus 189 It is therefore, quite probable that the followers of the Buddhist faith may have reproduced the whole picture of the Gospels in their books. All such points of resemblance arise from the fact of Jesus’ visit to India, which was a piece of good fortune for the followers of the Buddhists’ faith from his staying among them for a considerable time. In my opinion this is the reasonable explanation and a satisfactory answer to the question: ‘How did the events of Jesus’ life and his teachings creep into Buddhist literature and become ascribed to Gautama Buddha?’
