Afghans. —According to their native traditions, the Afghans also are to be identified with the Lost Ten Tribes. They declare that Nebuchadnezzar banished them into the mountains of Ghor, whence they maintained correspond- ence with the Arabian Jews: Subsequently they became Muslims (Malcolm, ‘History of Persia’, 11,596, London, 1815). The Afghans still call themselves ‘Beni Israel’ and are declared to have a markedly Jewish appearance. Their claim to Israelitish descent is allowed by most Muslim writers. G. Moor, in his Lost Tribes, p. 143–160, London, 1886, also identified the Afghans with the Ten Tribes. 2. Sir Henry Yule, K. C. S. I. , says:— The Afghan chroniclers call their people Beni-Israel (Arabic for Children of Israel) and claim descent from King Saul (whom they call by the Mohammedan cor- ruption Talut) through a son whom they ascribe to him, called Jeremiah, who again had a son called Afghanna. The numerous stock of Afghanna were removed by Nebuchadnezzar and found their way to the Mountains of Ghor and Feroza east and north of Hirat. 3. James B.
