Chapter Eight—Did Jesus Die on the Cross and Ascend to Heaven? 97 4. ‘Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ. ’ 1 5. ‘Behold, I Paul, say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. ’ 2 These teachings were quite different from the teachings of Jesus who, during his whole life, acted according to the Law. A short time before he was arrested by the Jews, he celebrated and ate the Passover with his disciples. 3 He said to a leper whom he had cleansed from leprosy: ‘Shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. ’ 4 He further enjoined them to offer their gifts on the altar. 5 His disciples also acted according to the Law; the woman who came with Jesus to Jerusalem prepared spices and ointments and rested on the Sabbath day, according to the commandment. 6 St. Paul, therefore, had neither command nor right to abol- ish or to modify the commandments of the Law.
