? 80 transformed into an astral body, he would have had no fear of being rearrested or of death, and would have shown himself to his opponents and proclaimed in the public meetings his escape, his victory over death. Moreover, he would have shown his love to his enemies by preaching to them so that they might have believed in him. But he took precautions for his safety because he was with his mortal body afraid of being recaptured and put to death. The various authors in their commentary, under verse 39, chapter 24 of Luke, write: One of the chief heresies in the primitive church was that which taught, in direct contradiction to this and other passages, that Christ was only an appearance, or phantom, having no real body, and therefore enduring no real suffer- ings. This risen body of the Lord was the same [as that] in which he now sitteth at the right hand of God. 1 He asked his disciples if they had anything to eat and he did eat before them: he walked the whole distance from Jerusalem to Galilee on foot, not on the main road, but by circuitous paths in order to evade pursuit, which he need not have done if he had been other than an earthly being. 1.
