45 Glossary Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It refers to the Muslim pilgrimage to Makkah that all Muslims are expected to make at least once during their lifetime if they have the means to do so. Jamā ‘ at a united body of Muslims with a leader is referred to as Jamā‘at in Islamic terminology. Jihad an Arabic term that means to struggle or strive. It has several connotations including spiritual and moral endeavours. Additionally, it is also used for warfare in Islam whereby Muslims are permitted to take up arms to defend themselves or punish the aggressors. Kharijites a group of Muslims known for extremely rigid interpretation of faith who rebelled against authority during the early Islamic centuries. Khilafat Movement a political campaign launched by Indian Muslims in British India over British policy against Turkey and the planned dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire after World War I by allied forces.
