Understanding S al A t 180 1. Verbal worship ( ُ اَلتَّحِيَّات ) correlates with peace ( اَلسَّالَمُ ). 2. Physical acts of worship ( ُ اَلصَّلَوَات ) correlate with mercy ( رَحْمَةُ ). 3. Financial sacrifices ( ُ اَلطَّيِبَات ) correlate with bless- ings ( بَرَكَاتُ ). ( Ris ā lah Dur u d Shar ī f by Hadrat Muhammad Ismaīl Halālpurī ra , pp. 219-220) This style of correlation ( لف و نشر ) is also found in many places in the Holy Quran. When we say ‘peace be on you, O prophet’ ( ُّهَا ی ُّ اَلسَّالَم ُ عَلَيْك َ اَ النَّبِي ), we pray that any reward we receive for our verbal wor- ship ( اَلتَّحِيَّاتُ ) descend on the Holy Prophet sas in the form of peace ( ُ اَلسَّالَم ). When we say ‘and the mercy of Allah’ ( ِ وَرَحْمَة ُ هللا ), we pray that any reward we receive for our physical acts of worship ( ُ اَلصَّلَوَات ) descend on the Holy Prophet sas in the form of mercy ( ُ رَحْمَة ). When we say ‘and His blessings’ ( ُ وَبَرَكَاتُه ), we pray that any reward we receive for our financial sacrifices ( اَلطَّيِبَاتُ ) descend on the Holy Prophet sas in the form of bless- ings ( ُ بَرَكَات ). This sentiment of prayer is in line with a Dur ū d of the Promised Messiah as where he as prayed, My Lord, whatever you intend to give me of rewards, give it to the Holy Prophet sas. Then, forgive me by Your favour. ( R uhā n ī Khaz ā in , vol. 18, pp. 204)
