Therefore, I am certain that this community is God-fearing and sincerely obedi - ent. They are grateful to the British government and well-wishers of all humanity. They are not consumed by barbaric passions and beastly characteristics. If the senior officials of the government would take the least bit of trouble and closely read my publica - tions of the past nineteen years, they would find that the teach - ings I have outlined above, by way of illustration, are found in the majority of my books. No one can remain the follower of another unless he finds a complete consistency between the words and deeds of their mas - ter. So if my actions were contradictory to the words that I have expressed above by way of illustration, how could an intelligent person continue to have faith in me, inasmuch as a large part of my community consists of intelligent and educated people? Some of them hold respectable positions in the government such as revenue officers and extra assistants. There are lawyers, doctors, assistant surgeons, wealthy nobles, chieftains and merchants of the Punjab as well. From time to time I have been publishing their names. Any wise person can understand that there is nothing more unethical than to teach one thing but to act differently in secret. Is it possible for good-hearted and wise persons to share company with such an evil individual for even a moment? It will bring great satisfaction to the government to learn that the people of my community are not ignorant, barbaric, wicked, immoral, or ill-mannered. In fact, they are so renowned in their virtue and righteousness that even in the eyes of the gov - ernment, many of them are known to be pious, good-tempered,
