The full h ad i th is as follows: The translation of the first part of the h ad i th which is gen- erally cited is the following: ‘Uqbah bin ‘ A mir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that “The Messenger sa of Allah said: ‘If there was to be a Prophet after me, it would certainly have been ‘Umar bin al- Kha tta b. ’” The second part of the h ad i th which gives the commentary of Im a m Tirmidh i on the above statement is conveniently disregarded.
