006 AHRAR STARTS RIOTS It is the Ahrar which has touched off the mob action which has brought about the first, imposition of Martial law in Pakistan history۔Martial law has thus far been applied only in Lahore, capital of the wheat- growing Punjab۔most populous province of West Pakistan۔It was imposed following a series of mob- killings, looting of post offices and shops, arson and disruption of communications۔Ahrar is led by mullahs, Moslem priests۔Pakistan was separated from India on the basis of the Moslem faith of its inhabitants and immigrants, and the mullahs have long sought a greater voice in direction of government۔They have resented the western orientation and religious liberalism of government leaders of the dominant Moslem League party۔As a stick to beat the government, they have seized upon the long-standing Ahmedi controversy۔The Ahmadis, also, called Qadianis, are considered heretics by orthodox Moslems because they proclaim their founder, dead 40 years, as a true prophet۔Orthodox Moslems believe Muhammad was the last of the prophets۔Ahrar demands that the government declare the Qadianis to be a non-Moslem minority, placing them
