They are dead, not living: and they know not when they will be raised. ” 16[Al - Na ḥ l]:21-22) The word Ta waffaitanī is derived from Tawaffā , meaning death. The term is used for the deceased in the Funeral Prayer with the word Fatawaffāhu (see “Some prayers for successful Preaching”). The Holy Prophet himself said: َ ِْشِْیْن ِسَ ابْن َ مَر َْیََ عَاش َ ع ٍ اِن َّ عِی َنَۃ و َ مِائَۃ َ س “Verily, Jesus, son of Mary, lived 120 years. ”(Kanzul -Umm ā l, Vol. 6, p. 160 and Ḥ ujajul-Kar ā mah, p. 428) He also said: ْ َلَو َكَن ہ َمُوْس و ِسہ ََّیِْعِی حَي لَمَا َّوَسِعَھُمَا ٍاِل اتٍِّبَاعِی “If Moses and Jesus had been alive , they would have had to follow me. ” (Zurqānī, Vol. 6, p. 54 and Ibn Kathīr, Vol. 2, p. 246) Many scholars of Islām have said that Jesus did indeed die a natural death. Ḥ a ḍrat Imām Ḥ asan, the grandson of the Holy Prophet, said on the death of his father Ḥ a ḍ rat ‘Alī : ْ ِْشِْیْن َ مِن َبْع َ وَع َْیََ لَيْلَۃ َ س بْن ِ مَر ِْسہ َِِّْ عُرِج َ فِيْھَا بِرُوح ٍ عِی َ ِفِ اللَّيْلَۃ ِ ال َ لَقَد ْ قُبِض رَمَضَان “He (Ḥ a ḍ rat ‘ Al ī ) has passed away during the night in which the soul [not the body] of Jesus, son of Mary, was raised, that is, the night of the 27th of the month of Ramadan. ” (Ṭ abaq ā tul-Kab ī r by Ibn Sa‘d , Vol. 3) About Ḥ a ḍrat Imām Mālik, an authority on Islāmic jurisprudence, it is written: َ لَم ْ یَمُت ْ وَقَال َ مَالِک ُ مَات ِْسہ ُّْثَُ اَن َّ عِی وَالَْک “ Although many peop le say that Jesus did not die, Imām Malik used to say he had died. ” (Majma‘ul -Bih ā r)
