42 Nonetheless, take note that this promise was not fulfilled in favour of these people who had suffered under Pharaoh. Observe: And the Lord heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying, Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers, Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it… (Deuteronomy 1:34–36) Similarly, the disbelievers of Makkah, asked for some such mira- cles which are mentioned below: 1. 1 َو اْوُلاَق ْنَل َنِمْؤُّن َكَل ىّٰتَح َرُجْفَت اَنَل َنِم ِضْرَاْلا اًعْوُبْۢنَي۰۰ 2. ْوَا َطِقْسُت َءٓاَمَّسلا اَمَك ْوَا َنْوُكَي َكَل ٌتْيَب ْنِّم ٍفُرْخُز ْوَا ىٰقْرَت يِف ْوَا َنْوُكَت َكَل ٌةَّنَج ْنِّم ٍلْيِخَّن َّو ٍبَنِع َرِّجَفُتَف َرٰهْنَاْلا اَهَلٰلِخ اًرْيِجْفَت۰۰ ِءٓاَمَّسلا١ؕ َو ْنَل َنِمْؤُّن َكِّيِقُرِل ىّٰتَح َلِّزَنُت اَنْيَلَع اًبٰتِك ٗهُؤَرْقَّن١ؕ ْلُق َناَحْبُس ْيِّبَر ْلَه ُتْنُك اَّلِا اًرَشَب َتْمَعَز اَنْيَلَع اًفَسِك ْوَا َيِتْاَت ِهّٰللاِب َو ِةَكِٕىٰٓلَمْلا اًلْيِبَق۰۰ 2 اًلْوُسَّر۰۰ From the verses listed above it is learnt that the disbelievers of Makkah asked for six such miracles from the Holy Prophet, peace 1. And they say, ‘We will never believe you until you cause a spring to gush forth for us from the earth’ ( S u rah Bani Isr a ’ i l, 17:91). [Publisher] 2. ‘Or you have a garden of date palms and vines, and cause streams to gush forth in the midst thereof in abundance; ‘Or you cause the heaven to fall upon us in pieces, as you have claimed, or you bring Allah and the angels before us face to face; ‘Or you have a house of gold or you ascend up into heaven; and we will not believe in your ascension until you send down to us a book that we can read. ’ Say, ‘Holy is my Lord! I am not but a man sent as a Messenger. ’ ( S u rah Bani Isr a ’ i l, 17:92–94) [Publisher]
