'" 36 That is, when they lost control over that matter, and they came to a full realization that they had gone astray, and had been guilty of wrongdoing, they exclaimed: If Allah, the Exalted, does not show mercy on us, and does not forgive us—or, had He not shown mercy to us and forgiven us—we would certainly (have) become of those who are the losers. Quoting this portion of the verse, Maulana ‘Uthm a n i says: "But even this repentance did not save them from the punishment in this world" [i. e. , they were murdered in spite of their repentance. ] 37 It is as if, according to Maulaw i Sahib, this is the definition of the 'losers' [ Kh a sir i n ].
