Around 1923, the Hindus started a Movement with the intention that all the Muslims living in the area, who were once Hindus, would convert back to their origi- nal faith. This Movement continued secretly for a long time, and the Muslims remained completely unaware of it. When news first appeared in the papers exposing this con- nection, the poor Muslims sought the help of the Deoband and D a r-un-Nadwah in Lucknow. A riot erupted, and everyone started saying that this Hindu effort must be nul- lified and that a jihad should be waged to keep Muslims attached to their faith. The reaction that took place in Qadian was remarkable. A strong and powerful reaction in response to the Shudh i Movement was started in Q a di an by the Ahmadiyyah Muslim Jam a ‘at, which completely turned the direction of the Shudh i Movement and brought the Hindus to their knees. I would like to shed some light on the other movements that arose in reaction to the Shudh i Movement and their achievements with special reference to A h r a r. I shall also refer to Hindu newspapers and the newspapers of the non- Ahmad i Muslims.
