CHAPTER 36 The Holy Prophet Muhammad sa 's Contentment and Unpretentiousness 866 travelled. He was not embarrassed to carry a pillion rider. His demeanour was totally free from affectation. The people of Mad i nah quite often saw the scene that the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa was riding a donkey or a mule and at times Hadrat Ab u Bakr ra at times Hadrat ‘Uthm a n ra or Hadrat ‘Al i ra were riding as pillion passenger. Some times it would be Zaid bin Ha rthah ra or from amongst the children it would be H asan ra , Us a mah rs bin Zaid riding behind him. Sometimes from older people Anas bin M a lik ra , Ab u D a w u d ra , Ab u T al ha ra or Ab u Hurairah would ride with him. From amongst the young Companions it was Mu‘ a dh bin Jabal ra or J a bir bin ‘Abdull a h and at times one of his wives would ride with him on the she camel. Once H u du r sa went to enquire about the health of Sa‘d bin ‘Ub a dah, the chief of Khazraj tribe. He, as a mark of respect, gave H u du r sa his she camel and sent his son Qais to take the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa to his house. H u du r sa told Qais to ride in the front as it was his camel. He was reluctant to do so in view of respect for H u du r sa but the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa told him quite informally that either he should sit in front or return home. 28 The saddle on his mount was also very basic.
