27 December 1906 75 1 ىًدُه َنْيِقَّتُمْلِّل۠ ىًدُه َنْيِقَّتُمْلِّل۠ Therefore, to understand the Holy Quran and to attain guid- ance in accordance with it, taqw a is absolutely essential. Similarly, it has stated at another place: 2 اَل ۤٗهُّسَمَي اَّلِا َنْوُرَّهَطُمْلا۠ اَل ۤٗهُّسَمَي اَّلِا َنْوُرَّهَطُمْلا۠ This is not a prerequisite for other sciences. There is no stip- ulation requiring a student learning mathematics, geometry, or astronomy etc. to be righteous or pious; rather, he can still learn them regardless of however sinful and evil he may be. In the science of religion, however, a person possessing mere logic and philosophy cannot make progress, and those verities and insights cannot become manifest upon him. One whose heart is corrupt and holds no share of righteousness, and then alleges that the knowledge of religion and verities pour forth from his tongue, is lying. He can never ever attain a share of the faith’s verities and insights in this way. On the contrary, it is impera- tive to be a muttaq i [righteous individual] in order to attain the finer and subtle insights of faith, as is mentioned in this Persian couplet: رعوس رضحت رقٓان اقنب ٓاہگن ربدارد ہک دار اکلمل ینعم را دنک اخیل ز رہ وغاغ The bride of the court of the Holy Quran raises her veil When the centre of the soul [the heart] is cleared of every kind of mischief and uproar. So long as this state does not arise and the centre of the soul 1. It is a guidance for the righteous ( S u rah al-Baqarah , 2:3). [Publisher] 2.
