The Holy Prophet sa declared that the Mahdi would be ‘an Arbitrator and Just. ’ He prophesied that the Mahdi would appear at the time when faith will have become corrupted; many crooked paths will be adopted—off the straight path prescribed by Allah—and, consequently, the Islamic faith will have experienced decline. Conflicts will have exceeded all due limits. The Imam Mahdi was to appear at that time to lead people into the light. The topic of the Imam Mahdi is mentioned in the hadith under the heading H akamu ‘Adal [the Arbitrator and the Just]. He was destined to issue his verdict to resolve the conflicting views and to give his judgment against the wrongdoers. In essence, the Mahdi was to appear in the Latter Days to resolve the conflicts by giving his verdicts and to rectify the prevailing wrong beliefs.
