252 With Love to Muhammad sa the Kh ā tam-un-Nabiyy ī n ِِّٰ هلل ْ دِﻳْهنَُﻢ وَاَﺧْﻠَﺼُﻮْا ِّٰ ابِهلل وَاﻋْﺘَﺼَﻤُﻮْا وَاَﺻْﻠَﺤُﻮْا اتَﺑُﻮْا َ اذلَِّﻳْﻦ َّ اِﻻ َْ اﻟْﻤُﺆْﻣِﻨِني َ ﻣَﻊ َ ﻓَﺎُوﻟٰٓﯩِٕﻚ ِ ﻋَﻈ اَﺟْﺮًا َْ اﻟْﻤُﺆْﻣِﻨِني ُّٰ اهلل ِ ﻳُﺆْت َ وَﺳَﻮْف ﻴْﻤًﺎ Except those who repent and amend and hold fast to All ā h and are sincere in their obedience to All ā h. These are among the believers. And All ā h will soon bestow a great reward upon the believers. 244 In the above verse, ma‘a can only mean “among,” not “with. ” Similarly, it is stated in the Holy Qur’ ā n: رَﺑَّﻨَﺎ ۖ ﻓَﺎٰﻣَﻨَّﺎ ُْ ﺑِﺮَﺑِّمك اٰﻣِﻨُﻮْا ْ اَن ِ ﻟِﻼِْﻳْﻤَﺎن ْ ﻳُّﻨَﺎدِى ً ﻣُﻨَﺎدِاي مسَِﻌْﻨَﺎ اِﻧَّﻨَﺎ ۤ رَّﺑَّﻨَﺎ ﺳـَﻴِّﺎٰﺗِﻨَﺎ ﻋَﻨَّﺎ ْ وَﻛَﻔِّﺮ ذُﻧُﻮْﺑَﻨَﺎ ﻟَﻨَﺎ ْ ﻓَﺎﻏْﻔِﺮ ِ اﻻَْﺑْﺮَار َ ﻣَﻊ ۚوَﺗَﻮَﻓَّﻨَﺎ “Our Lord, we have heard a Crier calling us unto faith, ‘Believe ye in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us, therefore, our errors and remove from us our evils, and grant us death among the righteous. ” 245 The other meaning of ma‘a is “with”. For instance, All ā h, the Exalted, says:. . . َْ اﻟْﻤُﺘَّﻘِني َ ﻣَﻊ َّٰ اهلل َّ اَن وَاﻋْﻠَﻤُﻮْٓا َّٰ اهلل وَاﺗَّﻘُﻮْا And fear All ā h and know that All ā h is with those who fear Him. 246 Here, it can only mean that All ā h is with those people who fear Him in the sense that His help, assistance, and succour is with 244 S ū rah An-Nis ā ’, 4:147 245 S ū rah Ā le ‘Imr ā n, 3:194 246 S ū rah Al-Baqarah, 2:195
