222 With Love to Muhammad sa the Kh ā tam-un-Nabiyy ī n 10. In the relevant portion of the quotation on the above scanned pages, Hazrat Shaikh Ahmad Sirhind ī rh states: The mutash ā bih ā t [verses susceptible of different interpretations] of the Qur’ ā n have to be understood through interpretation, instead of literal meaning. All ā h, the Exalted, says in the Qur’ ā n: ُّٰ اهلل َّ اِﻻ َۤٗ اتَْوِﻳْهل َُ ﻳَﻌْمل ۘوَﻣَﺎ 223 Hence, we learn that the mutash ā bih ā t are susceptible to interpretation in the sight of All ā h, the Exalted,. Their literal meaning is not intended. All ā h, the Exalted, allows those firmly grounded in knowledge to partake of this knowledge of right interpretation. Hence, at a higher level, the knowledge of the unseen specific to All ā h, the Exalted, is only granted to the prophets. This (knowledge of) interpretation should not be understood the same as when the word “yadd” [hand] refers to “power” and the word “wajh” [face] refers to “being. ” By any means, this is not so! Instead, the knowledge of this interpretation is only given to the most special servants (of All ā h). In other words, he is saying that All ā h, the Exalted, teaches the secrets of the Qur’ ā n through revelations made to the divine scholars of the ummah. However, those who are granted knowledge of the unseen specifically and at a higher stage are called prophets. Moreover, in makt ū b Number 301, he has written: 223 And none knows its right interpretation except All ā h. —S ū rah Ā le Imr ā n, 3:8
