416 CHAPTER 40 SUN AND MOON DARKENED The gospel of St. Mark (13: 24) says: 'But in those days after that tribulation, the Sun shall be darkened, and the Moon shall not give her light, and the Stars shall be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. ' (See also Matt. 24: 29). It is obvious that these words cannot be taken literally. If the sun were to be really darkened, life on this planet would become extinct, as all life is dependant on the light of the sun. If the stars fell from the heavens, this universe would be annihilated, for every part of the universe is dependant upon the other and cannot exist without it. Again, if the powers of heaven were shaken literally, not only men but even angels would cease to exist. Jesus as himself has said that after these things come to pass, the Son of Man will take away the Earth from the evildoers and give the inheritance thereof to the righteous. But if the sun and
