27 this tradition is that whatever wealth came into the hands of the Holy Prophet he gave away to the poor and the needy and whatever slaves he happened to possess he hastened to set free so that when the Prophet died he was both penniless and slaveless. . In short, the teaching which Islam gave with regard to slaves was not meant to adorn papers only, but formed part and parcel of the law of Islam and the social life of the Muslims, and there is conclusive evidence to prove that both the individual and the State carried this teaching into practice with the fullest zeal and ardour.
