319 promise of the latter days comes, We shall bring you together out of various peoples. ’ Commentators of the Holy Quran take ‘the land’ to mean Egypt, while some think that it refers to Doomsday. Both interpretations are wrong because the Israelites were commanded to live in the Holy Land and not in Egypt. Similarly, ‘promise of the latter days’ cannot mean the Doomsday because Doomsday has no relation to living in the Holy Land. The correct meaning is that they were commanded to live in the Holy Land and that when the ‘promise of the latter days’ comes they will once again be gathered there. This means that there would come a time when they would have to leave the Holy Land, however, at the time of the ‘promise of the latter days’, (the second coming of the Messiah), they would be gathered once again. In the commentary Fat h ul-Bay a n we are told that the time of ‘the promise of the latter days’ marks the descent of Jesus from heaven. 43 Also, the chapter of the Holy Quran just quoted divides the history of the Jewish people into two major periods. Of the second period, it says: اَذِاَف َءٓاَج ُدْعَو ِةَرِخٰاْلا اٗءْٓوُسَيِل ْمُكَهْوُجُو َو اوُلُخْدَيِل َدِجْسَمْلا اَمَك ُهْوُلَخَد َلَّوَا ٍةَّرَم َّو اْوُرِّبَتُيِل اَم 44 اْوَلَع اًرْيِبْتَت So when the time for the latter warning came, We raised a people against you to cover your faces with grief, and to enter the Mosque as they entered it the first time, and to destroy all that they conquered with utter destruction. It appears from this verse that the ‘promise of the latter days’
