CLOSING SCENE Hadrat Maulw i Nur-ud-D i n ra — Khalifatul Masih I 306 from every direction. In the midst of the clamour Maulaw i Sayyid Muhammad A h san ra stood up and said in a loud voice: The Promised Messiah sa said concerning me that I was one of the two angels mentioned in Hadith leaning upon whom the Messiah would descend in the latter days. I consider Sahibz a da Bashir-ud-Din Ma h m u d Ahmad ra fully qualified in every respect to accept our allegiance and request him to swear us in. Upon this Maulaw i Muhammad ‘Al i and Sayyid Ha mid Sh a h ra both stood up, as if desiring to say something, and began to wrangle which of them should speak first. Those present were not in a mood to indulge them and Shaikh Ya‘q u b ‘Al i ‘Irf a n i ra gave expression to the general feeling by calling out: "Time is too precious to be wasted in such wrangles. Our master, please accept our allegiance. " This was greeted with shouts of Labbaika , Labbaika , and people began to press forward towards Sahibz a da Sahib ra. The few dissentients then withdrew. No one tried to obstruct them. A hush fell upon the gahtering, though everyone was eager to approach closest to Sahibz a da Sahib ra. He sat in silence as if occupied in prayer. Q adi Am i r H usain, a revered divine, came up to him in great agitation and begged him: " H u du r, please do accept my allegiance. " Sahibz a da Sahib ra looked up, his eyes searching for someone. He espied Maulaw i Sayyid Muhammad Sarwar Sh a h ra , pressed down among the eager throng, and said to him: "Maulaw i Sahib ra , this heavy responsibility has fallen on me suddenly and unexpectedly. I cannot recall the terms of the pledge. Will you kindly instruct me. " Thus the process of swearing in began.
