H AL L M AR KS OF T HE S AIN TS 42 The consonants not included in the above list have the same phonetic value as in the principal languages of Europe. As noted above, the single quotation mark ‘ is used for transliterating ع which is distinct from the apostrophe ’ used for ء. We have not transliterated some Arabic words which have become part of the English language, e. g. Islam, Quran, Mahdi, jihad, Ramadan, and ummah. The Royal Asiatic Society’s rules of transliteration for names of persons, places, and other terms, are not followed throughout the book as many of the names contain non-Arabic characters and carry a local transliteration and pro- nunciation style. Acknowledgements The booklet was originally translated from Arabic into Urdu by Hadrat Maul a n a Ghul a m Ras u l R a jaik i ra and revised by the Central Arabic Board. This Urdu translation was then rendered into English by Kashif Imran and revised by Zulqarnain Bharwana. The English translation was then compared thoroughly with the original Arabic text by Dr. Bilal Ahmed Tahir. The booklet was finalized and formatted for publication by the English Translation Section of Additional Wak a lat Ta s n i f. Valuable services were ren- dered by al- Ha j Munawar Ahmed Saeed, Naser-ud-Din Shams, Naveed Ahmed Malik, Abdul Wahab Mirza, and Bilal Ahmad Rana. May Allah reward them all. A m i n.
