The Gulf Crisis & The New World Order THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE WAR So this is the psychological perspective of this war. The United States has been licking the wounds of its smashed pride up till now. This is the opportune moment when the U. S. is poised to extract the revenge of Vietnam from Iraq. They believe that it is only after breaking the will of Iraqis that the U. S. would be able to exorcise the ghost of Vietnam. I remember that President Bush or one of his colleagues had said: "what are you talking about Vietnam? This war would not be allowed to become another Vietnam. It will not be years , it will not be months, it will not be weeks, it will be days". Later on, we heard President Bush re-state his observations saying: "it will not be days, it will be weeks running into months. " Today one month has passed and so far they have been unable to break the will of Iraq and whatever claims have so far been made by Saddam, have been proven true and whatever ill intensions they had boastfully harboured, have failed to materialise. So today is the day after which this prediction of running into months would be literally true, but this second stance of President Bush has falsified his previous utterances. It is a matter of fact that if the entire Iraqi population were killed - God forbid, the American public opinion would remain unchanged, but even if a thousand American coffins were shipped to the U. S. then the American public opinion would lose its equilibrium and start rattling. So this entire peace initiative is being propagated on account of these reasons. One should continue to pray to God that He should not allow false gods to be imposed upon humanity. The greatest calamity in the world is when the Oneness of God is threatened. 0 Allah, if such false dem-i-gods are allowed to function as 'god' then who would remain to worship the true God and where would they live in this world? There would not be any abode for them in this world ruled by such false gods. So the greatest threat is, to the "Unity of God" - to the Kaaba - to the Lord of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. . . - to the sacred names of these precincts. The fact is that the "Oneness of God" would never be threatened - God Willing. The Holy Prophet of Islam also supplicated before God to invoke His Mercy by saying: 0' God if today in this battlefield of 'Badar', You did not come to the help of this handful of worshippers who are my 247
