[ 22 ] The Heaven-Bound Sect will be in the Minority Till yesterday, these people believed this h ad i th to be true. Their only contention was who amongst them was the righ- teous sect or the seventy-third sect as mentioned in the h ad i th. A well-known organ of Jam a ‘at-e-Isl a m i , Tarjam a n-ul- Qur’an , accepts this h ad i th and goes on to say: In Islam it is not considered that if a majority agrees on something it makes it right and valid. This major- ity is not a Great Multitude. For a crowd of people or a group of maulav i s to come together on an issue does not make it right… this meaning is amplified and supported by the h ad i th narrated by Hadrat ‘Abdull a h Bin ‘Umar ra : ‘Ban i -Isr a’i l was split up into seventy-two sects. My people will split up into sev- enty-three sects. All of them will be Hell-bound except one. People asked him who these people would be. The Holy Prophet sa said that ‘they would follow my way and the way of my Companions. ’ Further it is written in Tarjam a n-ul-Qur’an : This sect will not be in a majority nor will it claim that majority is a proof of validity or of being on the right. It would be one of the seventy-three sects, and in this world they would be like outsiders and differ- ent. As it was said: ‘Islam started in poverty and will once again revert to poverty. So glad tidings to the poor’.
