]ø u ø º is originally æ ø ] u ô º , the æ being changed into ] : One; the first of the numbers; syn. in many cases with æ ø ] u ô º , with which it is interchangeable in two cases. First, when it is used as an epithet applied to God, for ]ø » ø u ø ö as an epithet is applied to God alone and signifies 'The One'; 'The Sole'; He Who has ever been one and alone; the Indivisible; He Who has no second in His attributes. Î ö Ø » â ö ç ø ] Ö × # ä ö ]ø u ø º : Say, He is Allah, the One (112:2). Secondly, it is interchangeable with æ ø ] u ô º in certain nouns of number as in ]ø u ø º æ $ Â ô » ö æ » á ø : One and twenty. In most cases, however, differing from these two there is a difference in usage between ]ø u ø º and æ ø ] u ô º. æ ø ]ô á » ]ø u ø º Ú ôù à ø ] Ö» Û ö » ô Ò ô n» à ø ] » jø r ø ^ ø Õ ø Ê ø ^ø q ô » å ö : And if any one of the idolaters ask protection of thee, grant him protection (9:6).
