42 Khalifah —Caliph is derived from the Arabic word khalifah, which means ‘successor’. In Is- lamic terminology, the word righteous khalifah is applied to one of the four khulaf a ’ who continued the mission of the Holy Prophet of Islam. Ahmadi Muslims refer to a successor of the Promised Messiah as as Khal- i fatul-Mas ih. Khulafaa’ is the plural of khalifah. Khutbah —A sermon delivered by a Muslim Imam. Typically given at a mosque during the Friday prayer, or at other special occa- sions. Muhammad sas —Founder of Is- lam. see Holy Prophet sas. Musleh-e-Ma‘ u d — Hadrat Khal- i fatul-Mas ih II, Mirza Bashir- ud-Din Mahmud Ahmad ra (1889–1965), was the second successor of the Promised Mes- siah as. He is also called Mus- leh-e-Mau‘ u d (Promised Son) because he was born in accord- ance with the prophecy made by the Promised Messiah as in 1886 concerning the birth of a righteous son who would be en- dowed with unique abilities and attributes. Sunnah —Sayings and actions of the Holy Prophet Muham- mad sas. S u rah —A chapter of the Holy Quran. Tabligh —Defined as prosletyz- ing. Tabligh refers to propagat- ing the message of Islam. Tahajjud —A voluntary prayer performed by followers of Is- lam. It is offered late at night, pre-dawn. It is not one of the five obligatory prayers required from Muslims. It is also a ve- hicle for achieving nearness to God, because at that hour, one gives up sleep and forsakes the comfort of one’s bed to fall prostrating before one’s Lord.
