C ONDITIONS OF B AI ‘ AT AND R ESPONSIBILITIES OF AN A H MAD I 232 smoked the h u qq ah and their h u qq ah s were in the building at the time. When they heard about H u du r’s displeasure they all broke their h u qq ahs immediately and gave up smoking. Within a few days, when members of the Community came to know that H u du r disliked the h u qq ah , many courageous Ahmad i s stopped smoking it. ( A sha b-e-Ahmad, vol. 10, pp. 157–158, published in 1985) Mirz a Ahmad Beig of S a h i w a l narrates that Hadrat Mu s le h - e-Mau ‘u d ra once said to my uncle Mirza Ghulamull a h, ‘Mirz a Sahib, encourage your friends to give up h u qq ah. ’ Uncle, who himself used to smoke h u qq ah , said ‘Very well, H u du r. ’ He went home and broke his h u qq ah that stood by the wall. My aunt thought that he was upset because the h u qq ah had been left in the sun, but when my uncle did not say anything to anyone, and then my aunt asked him why had he taken his anger out on the h u qq ah? He replied: ‘ Hadrat Sahib had asked me to discourage others from smoking h u qq ah ; but as I myself smoked it, therefore I had first broken my own h u qq ah. ’ As long as he lived he did not smoke h u qq ah again; and kept on dissuading others from smoking it. ( Saw a ne h -e-Fa d l-e-‘Umar, vol. 2, p. 34) These days the same bad habit of h u qq ah is prevalent in the form of cigarette smoking. Cigarette smokers should try and give up this habit. At young age the malady of cigarette smoking leads on to many other forms of smoking in which narcotics are used. This is a step towards ruining young lives. It is web weaned by Dajj a l. Unfortunately Muslims countries are also involved in the drug abuse. Anyway, our young men should try to give up cigarette smoking.
