82 The commentary of al-Qa si dah A person asked T al h ah after the Battle of U h ud, ‘When the arrows were striking your hand did you not feel pain and cry out as a result?’ Hadrat T al h ah replied, ‘Yes, it was painful and I wanted to cry out, but I did not utter a word for fear that my hand might shake back and leave the Prophet’s face exposed to the next arrow. ’ 8 During the Battle of U h ud there is another incident involving a lover of the Holy Prophet sa. After sustaining an injury the Holy Prophet sa fell into a ditch and many companions who were trying to protect him were martyred in the process. The Holy Prophet sa was covered by their bodies as they fell upon him one by one. The opponents started yelling that the Holy Prophet sa had been killed. Upon hearing this news Hadrat ‘Umar ra broke down and sitting upon a stone, burst into tears. Another companion, Hadrat M a lik, who was under the impression that the Muslim army had won the battle, and was unaware it had turned into defeat, was eating dates as he passed by Hadrat ‘Umar ra. M a lik asked ‘Umar ra why he was crying. ‘Umar ra replied that the Holy Prophet sa had been martyred. Hadrat M a lik ra then questioned ‘Umar ra , ‘If this news is correct, why are you sitting here crying? We should go to the same world our beloved has gone. ’ Hadrat M a lik ra addressed the last date he was about to eat and said, ‘Between M a lik and Paradise you are the only thing that stands in between. ’ 8 As-S i ratul- H alabiyyah, ‘All a mah Abil-Faraj N u rid-D i n, vol. 2, p. 324, B a bu Dhikri Magh a z i h i (Ghazwatu U h ud), D a rul-Kutubil-‘Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2002
