12 oRPHAN’S WET NURSE I t was a custom in Arabia that women from the countryside came to cities every six months and took home with them infants of the nobility to nurse. Thus it provided them with a source of livelihood since the parents of these children paid handsome wages for their services. And the parents benefited by the fact that their little children were raised in fresh and open air that made them fit, healthy and clever.
