28 A LoYAL SLAVE AND A BENEVoLENT MasteR I t was a common practice of bandits and highwaymen in Arabia to kidnap children of nobility and sell them as slaves. This very catastrophe befell a respectable person belonging to the Qaz a ‘ah tribe named Ha rith who was a Christian. His son Zaid was a virtuous and obedient child. He had a charming appearance and possessed attractive habits. He was only eight years old when he accompanied his mother on a journey. On the way, bandits attacked the travelling party and Zaid was taken away with some other children. As was the custom of those rogues, the children were
