The Ecosystem 55 carbon dioxide alone. Each element found in the atmosphere serves a purpose and is needed in exactly the proper proportion at which it is found. The same applies to the upper layers of the earth’s atmosphere. In the stratosphere, the layer of the ozone is said to extend from eighteen to thirty miles in thickness. If by some accident this balance of the ozone layer were upset, there would be every danger for the earth to be bombarded by cosmic radiation at short wavelengths which are extremely destructive to life. Ozone specifically destroys ultraviolet at short wavelengths. Balance in the Vegetative and Animal Kingdoms The balance within species in relation to each other and the balance between the animal and the vegetative domains, are increasingly attracting the scientists’ attention. These kinds of balance comprise many categories. We enumerate some of them as below: • the balance of living organisms in relation to the habitat where they belong • the balance between the predator and it’s prey • the balance in migration of fish from their breeding grounds in mountain tops to oceans, and their counter migration back to their breeding grounds • The maintenance of balance between rivers and lakes and the interchange of the various life-forms they contain to and from the oceans.
