— Part II 224 … …And if thou judge, judge between them with justice. Surely, Allah loves those who are just. (S u rah al-M a ’idah; Ch. 5: V. 43) The following verse also builds up the same theme with great emphasis on the nature of enmity. If the enmity on the part of the people you have now come to rule had prevented you previously from performing your fundamental religious rights, even the memory of such enmity may never deter you from treating them with absolute justice. …And let not the enmity of a people, that they hindered you from the Sacred Mosque, incite you to transgress… (S u rah al-M a’ idah; Ch. 5: V. 3) In these verses, man’s attention is drawn to the fact that under no circumstances should justice be abandoned. Whatever the nature of the external or internal pressures, one must always hold fast to justice.
