Now the people in the neighbourhood of mosque have to listen to a multitude of Adh a ns, each starting one after the other, all being recited in different voices at different times and being transmitted loudly, thanks to the highly powerful loudspeakers, from distant parts of the city. Some Maulaw i s start their Adh a n before the break of dawn, others start long after. The result is a cacophony of seemingly never ending Adh a ns! And that is not all. Some of them sing their Adh a ns and many just croak. Some Maulaw i s indulge in practices which were never heard of during the time of the Holy Prophet sa. Many mullahs start to sing Na‘ts and hymns long before the time for morning prayer begins. Then comes the turn of A dh a n itself. So from the time of Tahajjud till the first light of day, the citizens including non-Muslims are robbed of their sleep and nerves. Some Maulaw i s, who think their voices are enchantingly melodious, compliment themselves by believing that the whole town is eagerly awaiting for their chantings to begin. Little do they realise that it is stricken with terror instead. Alas they never cast their eyes over the following verse of the Holy Quran:
