Glossary of Terms xix Ummatan Wasa t an: exalted nation, the best of nations, a nation which always treads the middle path. Was t : the best, exalted, the middle. Wazn: weight. Part II Adh a n: the Islamic call to prayer. Ajr: reward. D i n: faith, religion, custom, godliness. Fajr: The first of the five daily prayer services, offered any time during the period starting from dawn and ending a few minutes before sunrise. Ikr a h: coercion. J a hada: to struggle against anyone (including oneself). Jihad: struggle, war in self defence. See page 180 for the difference between jihad and Qit a l. Kalima: the credo of Islam, 'There is none worthy of worship except Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah'. Kalima-e-Tau hi d: profession of the Unity of God. Q a tala (verb): He waged war. Qit a l: waging of war. For explanation see page 180. Tahajjud: Optional prayer of great merit offered in the latter part of the night. Tayammum: To put or strike lightly the hands over clean earth and then pass the palm of each on the back of the other, blow off the dust and then pass them on the face. This is performed instead of ablution and Ghusl (bath). Z uhr: The midday prayer of the five mandatory daily prayers, offered any time during the period starting from decline of sun and ending before doubling of the shadows.
