Islamic Jihad Misunderstood 183 when the Muslims’ strength was at its lowest ebb. According to this incident at that time, one of the most famous infidel warriors expressed the wish to join the side of the Muslims. The Companions were overjoyed at this, but Prophet Muhammad sa rejected the request saying he would not accept help from an infidel in the cause of God. At this rejection the person immediately testified to the Unity of God, evidently because he wanted to join the battle. At this, the Holy Prophet sa accepted his claim without challenging his intention, despite the fact that he (the Holy Prophet sa ) was well aware that the man in question only wanted to side with the Muslims to satisfy his personal grudge against the invaders from Mecca. The Prophet sa of Islam accepted him into the fold of Islam because he was evidently motivated by the unshakeable principle that only God knows what passes within a human heart. So he extended him this fundamental right to profess whatever faith he may. The same principle applies to any hypocrite under all circumstances. This is fully elaborated in the opening three verses of Surah al-Mun a fiq u n which run as follows:
