Chapter Ten—Redemption or Atonement 125 Edom. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he built a city after the name of his son Enoch. ’ Now, if there were no other living men besides the sons of Adam and Eve, why did the Lord put a mark on Cain that he might not be killed by anyone, and from where did he get his wife? And how did he build the city if there were no other citi- zens besides himself, living in that part of the land? The fifth chapter of Genesis also indicates that at the time of the creation of man, the Lord created them male and female and blessed them, and called their name Adam in the days when they were created. 1 It shows that other men were also called ‘Adam’, and it was a common name given to all created men. When it is established that all men are not the descendants of the Adam who is sup- posed to have sinned, then the doctrine of Redemption, based on the fall of Adam in sin, crumbles to pieces. 2. In fact, no person can be a sinner deserving punishment until he breaks intentionally and knowingly, and not ignorantly, a commandment of God. In view of this definition of sin, Adam was not a sinner at all. It is apparent from Genesis 2:18 that God informed him that he was going to make ‘an help meet’ for him. And when he asked for his reason for eating of the forbidden tree he rightly replied: ‘The woman whom thou gav- est to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat’ (Gen 3:12).
