Where Did Jesus Die? — Page 25

Chapter Two—The Judgment 25 3. Who Broke the News of Jesus’ Rising? —Matthew (28:6) says: The angel who was sitting on the stone informed the two Marys, saying: ‘He is not here; for he is risen. ’ Mark (16:6) says: The men sitting inside the sepulchre told them the same. Luke (24:4–6) says: The two men standing by while the women were inside the sepulchre and were perplexed at not finding the body, told them: ‘He is not here, but is risen. ’ But John (20:1–15) tells a totally different story. He says: ‘As Mary Magdalene saw the stone taken away from the sepulchre she ran away and came to Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said they have taken away the Lord and we know not where they laid him. They came running to the spot and one after the other entered into the sepulchre and saw the linen cloth lying there and the napkin, that was about his head, wrapped together in a place by itself. After having seen this they went back home. But Mary stood without the sepulchre weep- ing, and as she wept she looked into the sepulchre and saw two angels sitting who asked her, “Woman! why weepest thou?” She had hardly finished her answer when she turned back and saw Jesus standing, whom she took first for the gardener, but knew him when he spoke to her. ’ 4. The Message of Jesus and Who Delivered it? —Matthew (28:5– 10) says that the angel sitting on the stone told the two Marys: ‘Go quickly and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead, and behold, he goeth before you into Galilee, there shall ye see him. I have told you. When they were on their way Jesus also met them and gave the same message. ’
