Chapter Two—The Judgment 19 Issues The three issues are so closely connected that they should be decided at one and the same time. The evidence for C on these issues is very conflicting. The four witnesses differ among themselves not only on triv- ial but also important points. Here are the important points of difference: 1. The Betrayer and his Accomplices —Matthew and Mark say that Judas (who betrayed Jesus) with a great multitude, from the chief priests and elders of the people, came to Gethsemane. But Luke says that the chief priests and captains of the temple and the elders themselves came to arrest Jesus. 1 2. How Jesus was Arrested —Matthew, Mark, and Luke say that Judas gave the multitude a sign saying, ‘Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. ’ And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, ‘Hail master’, and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. ’ 2 But John gives quite a different account of this arrest. According to him, on the arrival of Judas with a band of men, Jesus on his own accord went forth and said to them: ‘Whom seek ye?’ They answered him: ‘Jesus of Nazareth’, Jesus replied: ‘I am he. ’ And Judas also stood with them.
